For the first time in Pakistan, Wasa has deployed digital rain gauges in collaboration with a leading telecom company. Wasa Director Mudassar Javed announced that 16 locations across Lahore will now feature real-time rainfall monitoring using the advanced LoRaWAN network.
The launch ceremony was attended by Housing & Urban Development Minister Bilal Yasin at Wasa’s head office on Wednesday.
The minister praised the initiative, highlighting Wasa’s role as a pioneer in adopting new technologies for water supply and sanitation.
Mudassar Javed explained that the new system offers greater coverage, energy efficiency, low cost, high accuracy, and scalability. Real-time rainfall data will be integrated into Wasa Lahore’s central rain dashboards, replacing the older manual monitoring system.
Javed emphasized that Lahore has long faced urban flooding during monsoon seasons, traditionally monitored manually, causing delays and data gaps.
The new LoRaWAN-enabled smart rain gauges, strategically installed throughout the city, now provide accurate, real-time rainfall data to support proactive water management.
Key features include continuous rainfall observation, tipping bucket accuracy, wireless data transmission, weatherproof and dustproof design, secure data storage, dashboard access via web and mobile, and automated alerts and notifications.
