The Lahore High Court has released a detailed judgment regarding cases linked to Rule 17-A and family employment claims. According to the ruling, children of Punjab government employees who passed away before July 24, 2024, or who retired on medical grounds before that date, will remain eligible for government jobs.

Furthermore, the court has also directed the Punjab government to ensure that such children are provided employment under Rule 17-A, provided they fulfill the eligibility criteria defined in the rule.

Previously, the Punjab government had amended the Punjab Civil Servant Rules, introducing significant changes. Among the most notable was the abolition of Rule 17-A from the Civil Servant Rules of 1974.

Under this rule, the children or spouse of a civil servant who died during service were entitled to government jobs under a special quota. However, with its removal, family members of deceased civil servants had no longer been eligible for such employment benefits.

The amendment marked a major policy shift, affecting many families that once relied on this provision for job security after the loss of a loved one in government service.
