Islamabad, July 17, 2025:  Lahore has received its first trial vehicle of the Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) System, a trackless metro often called a “subway on wheels.”

The vehicle was brought in this month as part of a plan to check how this system could help improve city transport in Pakistan. The SRT works with Virtual Track Technology, a digital system that guides the vehicle without needing regular train tracks.

This type of transport is already running in several cities in China, as well as in Malaysia, the UAE, and Türkiye. It was first introduced in Jiangsu Province, China, in 2021. The system has also been honored with the Zhan Tianyou Award by the China Civil Engineering Society.

The vehicle introduced in Lahore is only for testing to see if the system would work well here. There has been no official announcement yet about when or if this system will start running in Lahore — for now, it’s just a trial.
