Islamabad, May 25, 205: A spell of stormy weather is headed towards Lahore and several other cities in Punjab, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting intermittent rains, gusty winds, and isolated hailstorms starting Friday night.

This sudden weather shift marks a sharp contrast to the recent scorching heat, offering both relief and risk to residents across the province.

According to PMD updates, moderate to strong moisture-laden winds will begin sweeping into northern Pakistan late Friday, pushing into central areas by Saturday. These unstable weather systems are being triggered by a fresh westerly wave, expected to impact upper and central regions of the country throughout the weekend.

As a result, cities including Murree, Rawalpindi, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Hafizabad, Lahore, and Dera Ghazi Khan are likely to experience rain showers paired with strong winds. Some areas may also witness isolated heavy downpours and hailstorms, particularly on Saturday and Sunday.

By Sunday, the weather activity will intensify, extending to over 30 districts, including Faisalabad, Multan, Bahawalpur, Okara, and Sheikhupura. Residents are advised to stay alert as winds may reach dangerous speeds, potentially affecting transport and public utilities.

In contrast, Lahore has been under a hot and dry spell for the past 24 hours. On Friday, the mercury climbed to 40°C, with 35% relative humidity recorded in the evening. Bahawalpur and Attock topped the temperature charts at 45°C, while Dera Ghazi Khan followed at 43°C.

The PMD predicts that Lahore’s maximum temperature will hover between 35°C–37°C on Saturday and rise to 37°C–39°C on Sunday—suggesting that while rain may bring momentary relief, heat levels will stay elevated.

Weather analyst Kamran Ali noted, “This system is typical for late May, where dry heat often gives way to sudden moisture inflow, causing violent weather events. Urban flooding and power disruptions remain a real concern in cities like Lahore and Gujranwala.”
