Islamabad, 29 May 2025: Tollinton Lahore’s Iconic Market, one of Lahore’s oldest and busiest trading centres for poultry, pets, and groceries, has recently been refurbished under a comprehensive redevelopment initiative worth Rs. 190 million.

The project focused on addressing long-standing complaints about unhygienic conditions, weak infrastructure, and safety risks.

Officials involved in the initiative shared that the market’s facade has been redesigned to present a more coordinated appearance.

Signboards have been standardised, and shopfronts now follow a colour-coded theme, adding visual consistency and making it easier for shoppers to navigate the premises.

To handle waste more efficiently, a structured disposal system has been introduced. Separate bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste, alongside garbage chutes, have been added to support responsible solid waste management.

As part of the interior enhancements, the market’s outdated fiberglass shades were replaced to allow for better ventilation and natural light.

Additionally, shop flooring has been reconstructed to promote hygiene and withstand heavy foot traffic.

Essential amenities such as handwashing stations, public restrooms, and dedicated cleaning areas have also been installed.

The previous network of exposed electrical wiring has been completely overhauled in partnership with the Lahore Electric Supply Company, ensuring a safer power supply throughout the market.

To improve food safety, poultry slaughtering has been confined to specially designated zones to reduce contamination risks.

Traders have been provided with training on proper sanitation practices. Pest control mechanisms have been introduced, and entry points vulnerable to rodents and insects have been sealed.

Moreover, a dedicated management body is being set up to supervise ongoing maintenance and ensure the facility’s sustainability.

Lahore’s Iconic Market now exemplifies how traditional commerce can be merged with modern urban planning to deliver cleaner, safer spaces for both vendors and shoppers.
