Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has placed an additional burden on solar consumers. According to the notification issued in this regard, only AMI meters will now be installed on solar consumers’ connections. LESCO sources revealed that the price of an AMI meter is Rs. 70,000.
Sources further said that earlier the meter cost was around Rs. 35,000. The supply of connections to applicant solar consumers has been halted, and this step is being taken on the instructions of the Ministry of Energy.
It is worth mentioning that a few days ago, incidents of theft of solar panels from government schools during 2022 and 2023 in Punjab came to light.
Following these revelations, the Public Accounts Committee directed the police to investigate the thefts of solar panels across the province. According to the report, solar panels were stolen from 50 schools in Rajanpur alone during 2022-23. The committee expressed concern over these thefts.
The meeting of Punjab Public Accounts Committee Three was held under the chairmanship of Tanveer Aslam Malik. He stated that strict letters would be written to the DPOs of districts where solar panels were stolen from schools. Tanveer Aslam Malik further said that the Education Department is not willing to take any responsibility and is instead shifting the responsibility to the District Health Authority.
