Islamabad. Sep 25: Look of the Week: Sabrina Carpenter honors Madonna in vintage Oscar’s gown
Sabrina Carpenter’s homage to Madonna at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards was a standout moment in this week’s Look of the Week.’
Carpenter dazzled on the red carpet in a vintage gown designed by Bob Mackie, originally worn by Madonna at the 1991 Oscars.
The gown, with its deep-V neckline and embellishments of sequins, pearls, and crystals, was a tribute to old Hollywood glamour, recalling both Madonna’s style and a nod to Marilyn Monroe.
Carpenter’s dedication to capturing Madonna’s iconic aesthetic wasn’t just surface level. She and her stylist Jared Ellner sourced the gown from Tab Vintage, and the attention to detail made the look even more significant, given Mackie’s legendary status in dressing Hollywood icons.
Mackie himself acknowledged the tribute, recounting the dress’s history on Instagram, noting that Madonna had originally requested the dress for her Academy Awards appearance, solidifying its place in pop culture.
The outfit was part of a larger celebration of Madonna at this year’s VMAs, where other stars, like Addison Rae and Anitta, also wore bridal-inspired looks to evoke the Queen of Pop’s iconic “Like a Virgin” performance. However, Carpenter took it a step further by wearing a piece directly from Madonna’s sartorial legacy.
Later in the night, Carpenter shifted from her vintage glamor to a stage-ready look, donning a crystal-encrusted corset bodysuit that took over 180 hours to create, in sync with the dazzling aesthetic of her earlier red-carpet appearance.
With additional nods to Madonna and Britney Spears’ memorable VMA moments, Carpenter paid tribute to pop royalty while also staking her own claim as a modern pop icon.
This stylistic tribute to Madonna, expertly executed with a blend of vintage fashion and modern-day references, made Carpenter’s look one of the most talked about and memorable moments at this year’s VMAs.
