Islamabad, April 09: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed a $2 billion investment commitment from global shipping giant AP Moller – Maersk, calling it a transformative development for Pakistan’s maritime sector.
The announcement came during a meeting with Robert Maersk, Chairman of the Board of Directors at AP Moller – Maersk.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed relevant authorities to expedite the conversion of memoranda of understanding (MoUs), signed with Maersk last year, into formal agreements.
He also ordered the creation of a technical working group tasked with formulating a maritime collaboration agreement, with actionable recommendations to be submitted within a month.
Stressing the need to overcome bureaucratic and operational hurdles, PM Sharif said Maersk’s investment would bring substantial advancements to the maritime sector, helping Pakistan align with global standards.
Highlighting the country’s rich marine resources, the Prime Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to leveraging these assets for national economic growth.

He noted Pakistan’s strategic geographic position and increasing relevance as a regional trade and transit hub, underlining the need to further develop its role as a dependable economic corridor for regional commerce.
The Prime Minister also invited Maersk to explore further investment avenues across Pakistan’s growing economy.
In response, Robert Maersk praised the government’s economic vision and policies, noting that Maersk’s global clients had expressed strong interest in business opportunities within Pakistan.

He reaffirmed the company’s intent to enhance investment in Pakistan’s seaports and port logistics.
Reflecting on the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and AP Moller – Maersk—dating back to 1924 when its first ship docked in the country—he stated that Pakistan’s role as an economic conduit to Central Asia is of strategic value.
Maersk, he added, is committed to modernizing Pakistan’s port infrastructure with cutting-edge technology to help establish it as a premier maritime trade hub in the region.
