Islamabad, Aug 16, 2025: A magnitude 4.9 earthquake Australia rattled parts of Queensland on Saturday, with residents across the region reporting powerful ground tremors. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake struck off the east coast of Australia at a depth of around 10 km (6.2 miles).

Initially, the quake was measured at 5.7 magnitude before being revised to 4.9. Authorities confirmed that there was no tsunami threat for Queensland, easing concerns of further damage. However, the tremors disrupted electricity supplies, leaving over 11,000 homes without power, as confirmed by energy provider Energex.

The epicentre was identified near the small rural town of Kilkivian, located about 170 km (110 miles) northwest of Brisbane. More than 9,000 people reported experiencing the quake through Geoscience Australia’s monitoring system, with many describing the event as one of the strongest shakes in years.

While emergency services continue to assess the situation, early reports suggest that the earthquake did not cause significant structural damage. For now, residents are urged to remain cautious as aftershocks may follow.
