Islamabad, June 19, 2025: WhatsApp has rolled out powerful new monetization features in its Updates tab, opening doors for content creators and small businesses to earn revenue directly through the app. These updates are part of Meta’s broader push to monetize its messaging platforms, without compromising user privacy.
The new tools are exclusive to the Updates section—which hosts both Status and Channels—ensuring that personal chats and group messages remain untouched. According to WhatsApp, the goal is to provide earning opportunities while maintaining a clear boundary between business and personal messaging.
Among the standout features is Channel Subscription, which allows users to subscribe to their favorite creators on a monthly basis. In return, subscribers get access to exclusive content. Another tool, Promoted Channels, helps creators and small businesses improve visibility by appearing as recommended in the Channels directory—an essential boost for those looking to grow their reach.
For the first time, WhatsApp is also introducing ads directly into the Status feature, marking a new chapter in the app’s business model. Businesses can now place visual ads in the Status section, creating a direct channel to users and increasing engagement with call-to-action messages like “Send Message” or “Visit Website.”
To tackle privacy concerns, WhatsApp confirmed that ad targeting will rely on minimal data—such as users’ language, country, and interactions within the Updates tab. However, if users have connected their WhatsApp to Meta’s broader platform, their activity on Facebook and Instagram may influence ad content.
Despite these monetization steps, WhatsApp maintains that all personal conversations, group chats, and calls will stay encrypted. “We’ve designed these tools to prioritize user privacy,” the company emphasized, adding that no phone numbers or messages will be shared with advertisers.
With these new updates, WhatsApp is positioning itself as a powerful platform not just for messaging, but also for creator monetization and business growth, without sacrificing its core value of secure communication.
