The Maldives has taken a historic step by imposing a complete ban on smoking for the new generation, becoming the first country in the world to do so.

According to the Maldivian Ministry of Health, the new law prohibits the sale, purchase, and use of tobacco products by anyone born on or after January 1, 2007. The measure aims to create a tobacco-free generation and protect public health.

The law was approved in May by President Mohamed Muizzu, who described the move as a bold step to safeguard young citizens from the deadly effects of tobacco. Officials said the decision reflects the country’s long-term vision of reducing tobacco-related diseases and promoting a healthier society.
