Islamabad, July 14, 2025: The Punjab government has officially launched the Maryam Nawaz Ration Card scheme, a major step toward food security and welfare for mine workers across the province. This new initiative aims to support 40,000 registered workers by providing monthly subsidies of up to Rs3,000, easing the burden of rising inflation.

The launch event, led by Mines Minister Sher Ali Gorchani under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, marked a significant milestone in the province’s shift towards a labour-friendly welfare state.

Gorchani praised the move as a symbol of economic dignity for labourers, noting that many early recipients of the ration card were workers originally from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “CM Maryam Nawaz believes every hardworking citizen deserves support, no matter which province they belong to,” he said.

He also announced a future increase in the food subsidy and highlighted Punjab’s record Rs30 billion revenue through a transparent e-auction of mining rights, setting a new example for other provinces.

Secretary Mines & Minerals Parvez Iqbal Butt unveiled an expanded welfare fund—from Rs700 million to Rs3 billion—and a Rs1.5 billion special package this year for mine workers. He further shared that children of mine workers would benefit from scholarships, free laptops, and electric bikes under the broader welfare initiative.

“We are focused on merit-based and transparent service delivery, ensuring that those who drive Punjab’s mining economy are not left behind,” Butt added.
