Islamabad, Nov 17: Maulana Tariq Jamil Condemns Fatwa on VPN Use, Defends Digital Freedom. The Council of Islamic Ideology’s recent declaration/fatwa against virtual private networks (VPNs) has been referred to as a “mental problem” and a mistake by renowned Pakistani religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel.
Which Sharai council issued the fatwa is unknown to me. According to this reasoning, since there is so much to view without a VPN, cell phones are likewise forbidden. “This fatwa isn’t right, in my opinion,” he stated in an interview with a private news program.
“This is a mental problem,” he added. This is wrong, in my opinion. The researcher’s comments follow the Council of Islamic Ideology’s Friday declaration that using a VPN is not Islamic.
According to the council, viewing “illegal or immoral content” using a VPN is prohibited under Sharia law and may cause the “spread of evil.” “We support and appreciate these steps because the state’s move to ban VPNs is commendable,” it stated.
It is worth noting that several internet users in Pakistan complained about bad internet connectivity and restricted access to VPNs on Friday night. In order to prevent restricted usage, the federal government has set a deadline of November 30, 2024, for people and organizations to register their VPNs.
