Islamabad, Nov 5: Met Office Warns of Smog Spike from Nov 6-8
The Punjab Environment Department has issued a ‘red alert’ for Lahore due to a significant rise in smog anticipated over the upcoming days.
The Met Office has predicted a marked increase in smog levels from November 6 to 8, leading to urgent health advisories for residents.
Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) was measured at a concerning 293 around 1pm, with pollution levels surpassing World Health Organization standards by 42.8 times, making the city the most polluted in the world.
Certain areas are facing even more critical conditions, with Gulberg reporting an AQI of 515, Defence Phase 8 at 424, and DHA Phase 5 at 416.
As wind patterns transition from east to west at a velocity of 4 km per hour, experts are cautioning that the situation may worsen further. Health professionals have recommended that the public limit outdoor activities and use masks as needed.
In reaction to the rising air pollution levels, the Environment Department has set up a Smog War Room, which is responsible for addressing various facets of air quality management.
Following a notice from Environment DG Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Smog War Room comprises 18 members, and officials from eight departments have been directed to report to it.
Designated individuals have been assigned for air quality monitoring, smog predictions, and supervision of industries and traffic, along with delegates from the health department and Safe City.
