Islamabad, Feb 8: Meta, the parent company of Facebook, is set to implement widespread layoffs next week while simultaneously ramping up recruitment for machine learning engineers. Internal communications, reviewed by Reuters, confirm that affected employees will receive notifications starting at 5 a.m. local time on Monday, particularly in the U.S.
Due to regional labor regulations, employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will be exempt from these cuts. However, workers across more than a dozen other countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa will be notified of their employment status between February 11 and February 18. Despite the scale of the layoffs, Meta has refrained from providing additional comments on the matter.
Last month, Meta disclosed its intention to let go of approximately 5% of its workforce identified as “lowest performers.” While the company aims to replace some of these roles, the latest memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People, refers to the layoffs as “performance terminations.” The Information was the first to report these developments.

Unlike previous mass layoffs, Meta will keep its offices open on Monday and will not issue further details regarding these job cuts.
Meanwhile, a separate communication from Peng Fan, Meta’s Vice President of Engineering for Monetization, calls on employees to participate in a fast-tracked hiring initiative. This effort focuses on recruiting machine learning engineers and other critical technical roles between February 11 and March 13.
Fan emphasized that these new hires align with Meta’s strategic goals for 2025, thanking staff for their cooperation in achieving the company’s accelerated hiring objectives.
With these restructuring efforts, Meta aims to streamline operations while reinforcing its commitment to artificial intelligence and machine learning development, ensuring its competitiveness in the evolving tech landscape.
