Islamabad, Sep 26: The European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) is set to transform messaging platforms by mandating tech giants like Meta to open their platforms to third-party services.
This change will enable users of apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger to communicate with individuals on other messaging apps, breaking the siloed nature of current platforms.
Meta has shared its roadmap for this cross-platform integration. Individual third-party chats are expected to roll out first, with group messaging to follow in 2025 and calling functionality by 2027.
While these changes are initially required only in Europe due to the DMA, it is likely that cross-platform messaging could expand globally, including in markets like the United States.
Meta has provided more details about the upcoming chat experience for WhatsApp and Messenger users. The company is working to make cross-platform messaging more transparent and accessible, taking into account feedback from users and third-party services. According to Meta:
Meta is actively preparing for the integration of third-party messaging services, driven by the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company has introduced new notifications in WhatsApp and Messenger that will inform users about available third-party chats
