Islamabad, July 3, 2025: In a development that has stirred the local tech community, Microsoft has officially shut down its operations in Pakistan, bringing a close to its 25-year journey in the country.
The remaining handful of employees were recently notified that the company was beginning a complete shutdown of its operations in Pakistan.
The news surfaced through a heartfelt LinkedIn post by Jawwad Rehman, the founding Country Manager of Microsoft Pakistan as he described the departure as the “Just like that, an era ends.” Jawwad headed the company’s local initiatives for seven years, playing a key role in assembling a team, serving clients, and enhancing digital infrastructure throughout Pakistan.

“It wasn’t just a job.. it was a calling,” Rehman expressed. “Those years were focused on empowering people, building alliances, gaining trust, and opening doors of opportunity for a generation of Pakistani youth.”

“This is more than a corporate exit. It’s a sobering signal of the environment our country has created.. one where even global giants like Microsoft find it unsustainable to stay,” he further wrote.
Throughout its presence in Pakistan, Microsoft established numerous computer labs in underprivileged regions.

The company’s exit comes amid Pakistan’s escalating economic challenges and widening digital gap. Once seen as a promising destination for technology investments, the nation has recently witnessed several international firms scaling back or reevaluating their presence.
Microsoft had earlier explored expanding in Pakistan in 2022 but later shifted its focus to Vietnam following political instability in the country.
