Islamabad 12 August: Flour Prices in Punjab Surge as Mill Owners Raise 20kg Bag by Rs50Lahore, August 12, 2025 — Flour mill owners in Punjab have increased the price of a 20kg wheat flour bag by Rs50, pushing the retail cost from Rs1,350 to Rs1,400, effective immediately.

The hike, announced on Tuesday, has sparked concerns among consumers already grappling with inflationary pressures.

Mill owners attributed the increase to a Rs150 surge in wheat prices in the open market, where the cost of a maund (approximately 40kg) of wheat has risen from Rs2,300 to Rs2,450. They claim the adjustment in flour prices reflects the higher input costs.

However, market insiders have questioned the move, noting that the provincial government regulates the wheat market, making such price hikes unlikely without oversight. They suspect speculative practices and have urged the Punjab government to investigate the increase and take swift action to stabilize prices and protect consumers.

The price hike comes amid broader economic challenges, with recent posts on X highlighting public frustration over rising food costs. The provincial authorities have yet to respond officially, but pressure is mounting for intervention to ensure affordability of this staple commodity.
