Islamabad, Dec 16: Minister of State for Information Technology, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, has acknowledged that internet speed in Pakistan currently falls short of required standards but emphasized that ongoing efforts will lead to significant improvements in the coming years.
Speaking at the National Broadband Network Forum, she highlighted the government’s focus on enhancing digital infrastructure to meet the growing need for fast and reliable internet across the country.
Khawaja outlined two major initiatives aimed at addressing the issue: the fiberization policy and the upcoming rollout of 5G technology. The fiberization policy will improve broadband connectivity, while 5G will provide faster internet speeds and broader coverage nationwide.
Additionally, the National Digital Commission will be formed, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and will include input from the Chief Ministers and key provincial ministers. This commission is tasked with developing a five-year action plan to promote technological growth in Pakistan. Khawaja also mentioned the introduction of the Digital Pakistan Bill, which will be presented to the National Assembly, and is expected to pave the way for the establishment of the National Digital Commission.
Cybersecurity remains a top priority, with the government working to safeguard Pakistan’s digital assets amid increasing cyberattacks. Khawaja also confirmed that the auction of the 5G spectrum will take place in April, which, combined with enhanced 4G services, will boost the country’s internet capabilities significantly.
