Islamabad, July 11, 2025: WAPDA Chairman Naveed Asghar Chaudhry paid a detailed visit to the under-construction Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project on Thursday, reviewing rapid progress across key work fronts of the multi-purpose development.
Located on the Swat River in Mohmand District, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Mohmand Dam is one of Pakistan’s most significant hydropower projects, with strategic importance for water storage, electricity generation, and flood control.
During the visit, Chairman Chaudhry inspected active construction zones including the main dam, spillway, powerhouse, diversion system, and power intake areas. He expressed satisfaction over the project’s pace, especially after major groundwork milestones like river diversion, coffer dams, and dam foundation excavation were successfully completed earlier this year.
According to project officials, work is currently underway at 14 critical sites simultaneously. The powerhouse construction has begun, and the spillway is progressing ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, the manufacturing of electro-mechanical components is nearing completion.
The dam is expected to start electricity production by 2027, with an installed capacity of 800 MW. Once operational, it will contribute 2.86 billion units of clean, low-cost hydel power annually to the national grid.
Chairman Chaudhry emphasized the dam’s importance for sustainable agriculture and disaster mitigation, noting that it will irrigate over 18,000 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda and improve irrigation for an additional 160,000 acres in the Lower Swat and Doaba regions.
