Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan has instructed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to make all motorways in Pakistan barrier-free, aiming to meet international standards for digital tolling and intelligent traffic management.

Chairing a high-level meeting at the NHA headquarters, the minister revealed that Artificial Intelligence (AI)–driven monitoring will be first implemented on the M-1 and M-2 motorways. This cutting-edge system will enable automated surveillance and send instant notifications to vehicle owners in case of traffic violations, such as over-speeding.

Aleem Khan highlighted the need to end the risky practice of motorway police manually stopping speeding vehicles. “Enforcement should now rely on advanced technology,” he emphasized, underlining both safety and operational efficiency.

The minister also urged comprehensive reforms in revenue collection and contract management. He called for transparent toll plaza auctions and a uniform policy for commercial activities along highways, ensuring complete digitization of all revenues. Citizens’ feedback, he added, must be actively incorporated to enhance motorway services.

On land use regulations, the NHA was instructed to set fair NOC fees based on city size and business type. Additionally, the minister encouraged expanding tree plantation along motorways, partnering with private companies for planting, maintenance, and preservation to secure long-term environmental benefits. With these steps, Pakistan Motorways Upgrade is set to enhance both safety and sustainability across the nation.
