Islamabad, June 21, 2025: As astronomical experts weigh in, the Islamic year 1447 Hijri is expected to begin on Friday, June 27, 2025, as the moon of Muharram may not be sighted on Tuesday, June 25. Experts confirm the moon will be born on June 25 at 3:31 PM (Pakistan Standard Time), making it nearly impossible to view with the naked eye across South Asia and the Middle East that same evening.
According to astronomers, June 26 offers a higher probability for moon sighting, particularly with telescopes. If confirmed, the first of Muharram 1447 will officially fall on Friday, June 27, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year in Pakistan and several other Muslim-majority nations.
The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee is expected to convene on Wednesday, June 26 to validate moon sighting reports across the country. An official statement on the start of Muharram 1447 Hijri will follow their decision.
If Muharram begins on June 27, the 10th of Muharram, known as Youm-e-Ashura 2025, will be observed on Sunday, July 6. This day carries deep spiritual and historical importance in Islamic tradition, especially in memory of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) in the Battle of Karbala.
The month of Muharram is not just the first in the Hijri calendar, but also one of the four sacred months in Islam. Devout Muslims across the world observe fasting, reflection, and mourning ceremonies during this period.
As the crescent moon sighting approaches, the anticipation for Muharram 2025 in Pakistan is building, with millions preparing to mark the Islamic New Year with solemn remembrance and religious devotion.
