Islamabad, June 26, 2025: The Islamic New Year 1447 AH has officially begun, as the crescent moon was sighted in Saudi Arabia and several Gulf countries on Wednesday evening, confirming Thursday, June 26, 2025, as the 1st of Muharram.

Following the announcement, the UAE declared Friday, June 27, a public holiday for both public and private sector employees, allowing a long weekend for reflection and observance. Similar announcements were made across Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman, where the start of Muharram is recognized as a national holiday.

Significance of the Hijri New Year

The Hijri New Year, also known as Islamic New Year, marks the migration (Hijrah) of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. This journey established the Islamic calendar and the Muslim community’s foundation.

While not celebrated with grand festivities like Eid Al Fitr, the day holds deep spiritual significance. It encourages Muslims to begin the new year with prayer, gratitude, and reflection.

Muharram: A Month of Peace and Reflection

Muharram is one of Islam’s four sacred months, during which warfare and conflict are prohibited. It is a time of increased worship, charity, and self-discipline. Many Muslims observe the day in prayer and remembrance, especially reflecting on the values of unity and sacrifice.

Over 20 Muslim-majority nations, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Oman, officially observe the Hijri New Year with national holidays, giving citizens time for religious contemplation.

A Shifting Calendar

Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, its months move forward by about 10 to 12 days each Gregorian year. Key Islamic events such as Ramadan, Eid Al Adha, and the Hijri New Year shift accordingly based on the moon’s appearance.
