Islamabad, Oct 28: The National AI Policy has not yet been finalized by the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication.
National AI Policy is a developing field, and governments are preparing to implement policies, procedures, and processes to maximize its potential benefits while reducing the risks that come with it.
Since June 2023, the Ministry of IT and Telecom has posted the Draft Policy on its website in an effort to get input from all parties involved.
An Artificial Intelligence Policy Committee has already been established by the Ministry of IT and Telecom to complete consultation and polish the document. Experts from government, business, academia, and civil society make up the Policy Committee. Five major components make up the regulatory framework included in the draft policy.
Although there isn’t currently a regulatory framework in the nation that is specifically focused on artificial intelligence, the ministry has implemented a variety of efforts, such as laws, rules, and policies, to try to address the possible issues that may arise from the usage of AI.
The National Cyber Security Policy 2021, Pakistan Cloud First Policy 2022, CERT Rules 2023, and other sector-specific laws like the Critical Telecom Data and Infrastructure Security Regulation (CTDISR) are just a few examples of this.
Additionally, as envisioned in the Digital Economy Enhance Project (DEEP), the Data Governance Policy will lay the foundation for a favorable atmosphere that will allow all stakeholders to trade data seamlessly.
It is important to note that the first pillar of AI includes provisions for the Center of Excellence in AI, the AI Regulatory Directorate, and other measures that will facilitate the establishment of a regulatory framework tailored to AI and that will carry out a need-based evaluation of the data being generated and processed for the specified purposes.
A strong framework for controlling the advancement and application of AI in Pakistan is provided by the Draft AI Policy that the Ministry of IT and Telecom plans to introduce. To guarantee that AI is applied for the good of society, the suggested framework seeks to achieve a balance between encouraging innovation and addressing possible hazards.
