Islamabad, Aug 13, 2025: On Tuesday, the National Assembly passed the Acid and Fire Attack Prevention Bill 2024, introducing some of the toughest punishments to date for such heinous crimes. Offenders may face the death penalty or imprisonment of up to seven years, while police officers proven guilty of flawed investigations could be jailed for two years or fined heavily.

The legislation, moved by PPP MNA Mehreen Razzaq Bhutto, is designed to curb rising acid and burn attacks, guarantee quick trials, and ensure comprehensive rehabilitation for survivors. Courts have been instructed to conclude such cases within 60 days to deliver swift justice.

Under the new law, victims will receive free medical treatment in public hospitals, access to rehabilitation centers, and free legal assistance. An Acid and Burn Crime Monitoring Board will be formed, ensuring at least one-third representation of women. Financial support will also be extended to the children and dependents of victims until they become self-sufficient, with special protection provided to victims and witnesses.
