The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Wednesday defended its decision to reduce K-Electric’s long-term base tariffs by over Rs. 7.60 per unit, saying the determination was taken after due process and consultations with all stakeholders.

The clarification came during a hearing chaired by NEPRA Member (Law) Amna Ahmed, attended by other members of the Authority.

Ahmed noted that the tariff decision was unanimous. “This determination reflects the collective judgment of the Authority. All members have signed it. It is independent and not influenced by external considerations,” she said.

She further stated that NEPRA’s role is limited to tariff determination and that it has no involvement in the federal government’s subsidy decisions.

Earlier this week, the Ministry of Energy endorsed NEPRA’s revised tariff structure for K-Electric, dismissing claims that the move was detrimental to Karachi’s consumers. The ministry said the revised tariffs were aimed at insulating consumers from the impact of the utility’s inefficiencies.
