Islamabad, June 12, 2025: A new reserve of natural gas and condensate has been discovered at an exploratory well named Faakir-1, in Sindh’s Khairpur region. The exploration falls under the Bitrisim Exploration License area.

The exploration, conducted at a site known as Faakir-1, falls under the Bitrisim Exploration License area. Sources indicate that the operation was carried out by Oil & Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), with Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL) as a minority partner. OGDCL holds a 95 percent stake in the project, while GHPL owns the remaining 5 percent.

The Faakir-1 well, which was launched on December 31, 2024, was drilled to a depth exceeding 4,180 meters. Executives with knowledge of the development suggest that the drilling process relied largely on in-house technical resources and was executed in coordination with GHPL.

Testing was carried out in the Lower Goru Formation, focusing on major sand-bearing layers. Reports suggest that two Drill Stem Tests (DSTs) were completed, with cumulative production showing an output of 6.4 million standard cubic feet of gas per day and approximately 55 barrels of condensate daily, using a 32/64” choke setting.

Sector analysts believe this new discovery could play a meaningful role in narrowing the country’s energy shortfall by increasing reliance on domestically sourced hydrocarbons. It is also expected to boost both OGDCL’s asset base and national reserves.

This isn’t the first such find in the region. In the previous year, a separate gas reserve was discovered at the Shahu-1 well, also located in Khairpur.
