Islamabad, Nov 12: New Gwadar Airport, A Landmark of Pakistan-China Friendship and Future Growth. The New Gwadar International Airport, a key project under the extensive China-Pakistan Economic Corridor initiative, is set to enhance connectivity and usher in a new era of development for Pakistan, experts have noted.
Serving as a testament to the strong friendship between China and Pakistan and their dedication to a brighter future together, the recent completion of the airport in Gwadar, located in the southwestern province of Balochistan, has been officially handed over to Pakistani authorities for operational readiness, according to China Daily.
The airport was inaugurated virtually by Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on October 14 during Li’s official visit to Pakistan. It has received positive feedback from specialists and citizens from various sectors in Pakistan. As the airport gears up to welcome travelers, it is anticipated to position Gwadar as a key center for regional connectivity and economic expansion, thereby opening up new avenues for progress.
Initiated in October 2019, the construction of the airport was one of the prominent undertakings of the CPEC. Upon its completion, it has emerged as a modern icon in Gwadar, establishing a stronger foundation for the future advancement of the port city.
According to the China Railway Beijing Engineering Bureau, which contributed to the project, the airport is capable of accommodating the largest commercial aircraft, including the Boeing 747-8. The runway measures 3,658 meters in length and 45 meters in width, ranking it among the handful of 4F-grade airports in Pakistan that can handle the largest planes.
“This is a significant airport in Pakistan, outfitted with cutting-edge technology and remarkable architecture,” stated Airport Manager Khalid Kakar in comments to Xinhua. Referring to the limited capacity of the previous airport, he noted that this newly built facility will attract airlines with modern fleets to commence operations to and from Gwadar.
