Islamabad, June 26, 2025: In a revered annual ritual, the black silk Kiswa was draped over the Holy Kaaba in Makkah on Thursday, marking the start of the Islamic New Year 1447 AH.
Crafted with precision at the King Abdulaziz Complex in Umm Al Joud, the new Kiswa 2025 took nearly 11 months to complete. It features 47 handwoven silk panels and 68 Quranic verses embroidered in silver and 24-karat gold. The final piece weighs around 1,415 kg, reflecting the rich Islamic heritage and intricate artistry.
The Kaaba Kiswa changing began after Asr prayer on the 29th of Dhu Al-Hijjah with the careful removal of the old covering. A skilled team of technicians carried out the ceremonial replacement in the early hours of Muharram 1.
This spiritual tradition is rooted in centuries of devotion and marks the Islamic calendar’s renewal. The event is deeply symbolic for Muslims worldwide, representing respect, unity, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s dedication to preserving Islamic rituals.
