Islamabad, July 16, 2025: The Excise and Taxation Department in Islamabad has shared a new vehicle registration update, announcing the start of a US-like vehicle number plate system. A notice has been released to begin using this new method. In this new system, registration numbers will be given to the owner of the car, not the car itself.
As per the official notice, every vehicle owner will get a special number plate that stays connected to their name. This new rule will be used for both newly bought and already owned vehicles. When someone sells their car, the number plate will be canceled, and the next owner will be given a fresh registration number.

The notice also mentions that a person can keep their number plate for up to one year even if they don’t have a car. But if it is not used for any vehicle during that time, it will be removed.
This step, mentioned in the official notice by the Director General of Excise and Taxation Islamabad, is meant to make the vehicle number plate process easier and more open.
