Islamabad, Mar 20, 2025: A new international women’s sevens soccer series, named “World Sevens Football,” is set to debut before the Women’s Champions League final in May.

According to media reports, organizers have announced a significant $5 million prize pool for each edition.

Co-founded by Jennifer Mackesy, co-owner of the American NWSL club Gotham FC and the WSL’s Chelsea, the new league has secured a commitment to invest $100 million over the next five years.

The Guardian reported that the series will feature eight world-class professional clubs and top global players, with a focus on the short format of the game.

Mackesy expressed that the aim of the series is to provide economic opportunities for players that reflect their true value.

In a statement, she highlighted that the prize pool will ensure that players receive the recognition and financial reward they deserve.

The sevens games will be played in two 15-minute halves, with extra time introduced in case of tiebreakers, ensuring fast-paced and exciting action.

The inaugural event will take place in Portugal from May 21-23, 2025. Future events are expected to be held across the globe, expanding the league’s reach and bringing women’s soccer to new audiences.

Described as a “grand slam series,” the league is set to become a major milestone in the development of women’s football, aiming to showcase the best players and clubs in the world.

This bold initiative aims to elevate women’s soccer to new heights, blending top-tier competition with substantial financial backing while paving the way for future international tournaments.
