Islamabad, 24 March 2025: New Zealand has qualified for the 2026 World Cup following a commanding 3-0 win over New Caledonia in the Oceania final.
This marks the return of the All Whites to the global tournament for the first time since 2010.
Veterans Michael Boxall and Kosta Barbarouses played pivotal roles in securing the victory for New Zealand.
Boxall scored his first-ever goal for his country in his 55th international appearance, heading in a well-delivered corner in the 60th minute.
Five minutes later, Barbarouses doubled the lead with a volley past the New Caledonian goalkeeper, igniting celebrations among the 25,000-strong crowd at Eden Park.
Substitute Elijah Just sealed the win with a third goal in the 80th minute, ensuring the place in the finals for the third time, after their previous appearances in 1982 and 2010.
The qualification of New Zealand was secured with a dominant position in the Oceania region, following three failed attempts in intercontinental playoffs for the last three World Cups.
With Oceania now granted direct access to the tournament, the All Whites were favorites to advance.
Barbarouses, emotional after his goal, expressed his joy, calling it his fifth World Cup attempt and a proud moment, while apologizing to his daughter for missing her birthday.
While New Zealand celebrated, there were concerns over a potential injury to captain Chris Wood, who limped off during the second half.
New Caledonia, ranked 152nd globally, fought hard but was unable to prevent New Zealand from sealing the win.
The All Whites now look forward to competing on the world stage, as the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico in 2026.
