If you are applying for a New Zealand student visa later this year, there are two major updates you need to know. Immigration New Zealand has officially moved the entire process online through its upgraded platform called Immigration Online (ADEPT).

At the same time, starting November, the government is allowing international students to work more hours during their studies.

Paper Applications Ending

From September 18, 2025, paper applications will no longer be accepted for most student visa categories, including:

  • English Language Student Visa
  • Exchange Student Visa
  • Fee Paying Student Visa
  • Pathway Student Visa
  • New Zealand Government Scholarship Student Visa
  • Foreign Government Supported Student Visa

All new applications must now go through Immigration Online (ADEPT), which went live on August 18, 2025. The aim is to speed up processing and make applications simpler.

What If You Already Applied?

  • Applications submitted before August 17 on the old system will still be processed.
  • If you started a draft but did not submit it, you must complete it by September 17, 2025. After that, draft applications will be deleted, and you’ll have to restart on the new system.

When Will You See the New System?

Since August 18, all new student visa applications are being directed to the new Immigration Online platform. Family and other visa categories are expected to move to the new system within the next year.

More Work Hours for Students

From November 2025, student visa holders will be able to work 25 hours a week during study periods, up from the current 20-hour limit. This benefit also extends to students in exchange or Study Abroad programs, even for one-semester placements.

What This Means for You

  • Use the new online application form.
  • Submit any draft applications before September 17.
  • Enjoy greater flexibility with 25 work hours per week starting November.

These changes are designed to make visa processing easier while giving international students more opportunities to support themselves during their studies.
