A devastating Nigeria boat accident has claimed the lives of more than 60 passengers after a vessel carrying over 100 people capsized in Niger State, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The tragic incident happened in Borgu Local Government Area when the boat hit a hidden tree stump during a condolence journey. The ill-fated vessel had departed from Tungan Sule in the Malale district, heading toward Dugga town. Around 11 a.m. local time, it struck the obstruction near Gausawa community, leading to a deadly overturn in the river.
Rising Death Toll and Survivors in Critical Condition
Borgu LGA Chairman, Abdullahi Baba Ara, revealed that the Nigeria boat accident death toll continues to rise. “So far, 60 bodies have been recovered, while ten survivors are in serious condition and many others remain unaccounted for,” he reported.
Eyewitness accounts painted a grim picture. Sa’adu Inuwa Muhammad, the district head of Shagumi, confirmed that most victims were women and children. “The boat carried more than 100 people. We recovered 31 corpses initially, and four were buried immediately in line with Islamic rites,” he stated.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency also reported 29 confirmed deaths, 50 rescues, and at least two people still missing. Local divers and rescue teams continue their search along the swollen river.
Boat Tragedies – A Recurring Problem in Nigeria
Unfortunately, boat accidents in Nigeria are far too common, particularly in the rainy season when waterways rise dangerously. Overcrowding, poor safety checks, and lack of vessel maintenance often contribute to such disasters. Authorities confirmed the boat was overloaded at the time of the tragedy—an issue repeatedly highlighted but rarely enforced.
Demands for Stronger Safety Rules
The latest Nigeria boat accident has reignited public outcry for tighter safety regulations. Officials say new measures are being considered to strengthen monitoring of inland water transport and prevent future tragedies.
