Islamabad, Sep 25: During a hearing at the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, Additional Attorney General (AAG) Munawar Iqbal Duggal stated that no decision had been made regarding a potential military trial for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. The IHC had previously asked the government to clarify its position on the matter.
Imran Khan’s petition, filed in relation to the May 9 incident, sought to prevent his trial in a military court after vandalism at military installations occurred following his arrest in a corruption case.
The rumours of a possible military trial stemmed from public statements made by Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, sparking concerns.
While Duggal assured the court that any decision to pursue a military trial would follow proper legal procedures, he noted that such a plea would first need to be submitted to a civil magistrate.
With this clarification, IHC Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb dismissed Khan’s petition. A representative from the defence ministry was also in attendance.
