Many Android users in Pakistan have shared their experiences online that the icons on their mobile apps have suddenly changed shape and color, sparking rumors on social media that phones are being remotely accessed or tampered with.
But there’s no need to panic as the change is part of Google Material You / Themed Icons update on Android, not a bug or security threat.
The update automatically adjusts your app icons to match your phone wallpaper and theme, offering a more personalized and visually consistent experience. This feature was first introduced in Android 12 for Google apps and was expanded in Android 13 to support third-party apps as well.
If you’re not a fan of the new look and want your original icons back, you can easily switch off the feature:
Go to Settings → Wallpaper & Style → Themed Icons → Off

There is no software hijacking involved, no unauthorized access and no external control over your phone internal settings. This is purely a design update from Google, nothing more.
For users whose devices don’t natively support this feature or for unsupported apps, alternatives like Lawnchair launcher, Shortcut Maker or themed icon packs can provide a similar look.
