The federal minister of finance Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb and revenue, stated on Tuesday that those who fail to file income taxes will be given an opportunity to clarify their situation before having their ability to travel outside prohibited.
Speaking before the National Assembly, the minister also mentioned that if a spouse is dependent on the taxpayer, a statement of foreign assets and spouse’s assets must include an explanation in accordance with Section 116 of the Income Tax Ordinance of 2001.
The minister added that the non-filer will be penalized appropriately by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) if they consistently file late returns.He further stated that the amount of the fine will rise if the non-filer has not even once filed the income tax return by the deadline.It is important to note that the federal government has suggested banning non-filers from traveling overseas in order to increase tax enforcement against them.
