Islamabad, Dec 14: On Thursday, the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) hosted an Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) to address the rising issue of drug abuse among young people.
The event featured an informative lecture by Major General Abdul Moeed, Director General of ANF and a NUML alumnus, along with an awareness walk. As the guest of honor, Major General Moeed spoke on the topic, “Drugs: A Menace; How to Counter It,” emphasizing the collective duty to protect the youth from drug use. He discussed the dangers of synthetic drugs, their impact on families and society, and the importance of advocating for a drug-free lifestyle.
Major General Moeed also shared alarming figures, including 75,000 arrests and the seizure of 300 tons of drugs worth Rs7 billion this year, despite limited resources. He called for a joint effort from institutions, educators, and parents to tackle drug abuse and pointed out the negative effect of drug trafficking on Pakistan’s international reputation. He encouraged students to play a key role in spreading awareness.
In his closing remarks, NUML’s Rector, Major General (R) Shahid Mehmood Kayani, highlighted the importance of awareness campaigns in addressing drug abuse. He revealed plans to integrate anti-drug initiatives into NUML’s academic calendar, partner with ANF on research, and offer internships to students. He also proposed launching anti-drug programs on NUML TV and organizing rallies to reinforce the message of a drug-free society. The event ended with an awareness walk led by Major General Moeed and the Rector, symbolizing unity and a commitment to a drug-free Pakistan.
