Under the vision of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab government has launched a environmental project named “Lungs of Lahore” to fight smog and pollution across the city.
The initiative aims to create a forest-like green belt around Lahore, serving as a natural barrier against urban expansion and helping to purify the air.
According to the Housing Department spokesperson, more than 4.8 million trees will be planted under the Lungs of Lahore project. The planned green boundary will stretch 112 kilometers, covering an area of 1,711 acres, and will be completed in three phases.
In the first phase, a 59-kilometer-long ring forest will be developed on 1,210 acres of land. The second and third phases will add 31 and 22 kilometers of forest area respectively. Officials confirmed that the first phase is expected to be completed within a year.
Once completed, the project will benefit nearly 20 million residents of Lahore by improving air quality and enhancing greenery. The Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) Lahore has been assigned to execute the project using modern eco-friendly practices.
