ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Industries and Production has extended its full support to Pak-Suzuki in establishing and promoting biogas as an alternative energy source in Pakistan.
During a high-level meeting with Pak-Suzuki representatives, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan assured the government’s cooperation in launching the biogas plant. He emphasized that the project would create economic opportunities for farmers while contributing to environmental sustainability and energy security.

Pakistan’s Untapped Biogas Potential
Pakistan has significant potential to generate biogas energy. Estimates suggest the country could produce 8.8 to 17.2 billion cubic meters of biogas annually from livestock waste and agricultural residues. With a livestock population of 170 million, Pakistan has the capability to generate 16.3 million cubic meters of biogas per day. Additionally, biomass sources could contribute 12,615 million cubic meters per year, supporting 4,761–5,554 MW of electricity production.

Despite this potential, Pakistan currently operates only 5,357 biogas plants, producing 20,454 cubic meters per day. Experts believe that up to 15 million plants could be developed nationwide, creating a massive opportunity for renewable energy growth. The initiative could also boost agriculture by producing 21 million tons of bio-fertilizer annually, lowering costs for farmers while improving soil quality.
Reducing Dependence on Fossil Fuels
Khan highlighted that Pakistan spends $16.91 billion annually on petroleum imports, out of a total $54 billion import bill. He stressed that investing in biogas infrastructure would significantly reduce dependency on fossil fuels, cutting national energy costs while enhancing economic stability.

Pak-Suzuki’s biogas project aligns with the Prime Minister’s “Uraan Vision”, which emphasizes clean energy adoption and environmental conservation. The government has set a target to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2030, making biogas an essential part of the strategy.

Future of Biogas in Pakistan
Under this project, biogas will be produced from cow dung to fuel vehicles and industries, offering an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to conventional energy sources. The transition to locally produced biogas could revolutionize Pakistan’s energy sector, ensuring sustainability, job creation, and economic resilience.

To facilitate rapid progress, SAPM Haroon Akhtar Khan has directed immediate action and announced that the government will introduce a biogas policy for industrial use. This policy will ensure efficient regulation, funding support, and long-term sustainability.
With Pak-Suzuki leading the charge and strong government backing, Pakistan is moving toward a greener, self-sufficient energy future, reducing reliance on imports while embracing renewable energy solutions.
