Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has declared an agricultural and climate emergency in the country, following approval from the federal cabinet.

Addressing a cabinet meeting, the prime minister said floods have wreaked havoc in Punjab, adding that climate change cannot be tackled overnight.

He further stated that thousands of acres of crops are submerged, expressing hope that Sindh suffers minimal losses from the floods. He added that assessments are underway to estimate the damage caused by the disaster.

According to a report from the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reveals that devastating floods across Punjab have impacted over 4.2 million people, 1.58 million animals, and more than 4,400 villages.

According to the report, 2,190 villages were affected by floods in the Chenab River, 651 villages along the Sutlej, and 1,495 villages in the Ravi region.

The report also confirmed that at least 76 people have lost their lives in various flood-related incidents in Punjab. Floods have also caused massive losses in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and many other parts of the country.
