Islamabad, Jan 11: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has officially dismissed widespread social media rumors regarding an unprecedented cold wave and snowfall in various parts of the country.
On Friday, the PMD issued a statement refuting reports suggesting that Pakistan would experience “the coldest days and nights in 100 years” between January 12 and 15. These claims, which included assertions that snowfall would occur in central Punjab, were labeled as false and lacking scientific foundation.
Snowfall Claims Debunked
The PMD clarified that snowfall in central Punjab is not possible due to the region’s geographic and climatic characteristics. The department labeled such reports as baseless and emphasized that the weather patterns in Punjab do not support such extreme conditions.
While the majority of Pakistan is expected to experience cold and dry weather, the PMD stated there is no evidence to suggest that the country will endure an unusually severe or historic cold spell.
Weather Forecast and Updates
The PMD forecasted that light rain or drizzle, coupled with strong winds, may affect various areas on January 11, including Lahore, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Okara, Sahiwal, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujranwala, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur, and Pakpattan. However, this will not lead to the extreme weather conditions being falsely circulated online.
Public Safety and Accurate Information
The PMD has urged the public to rely exclusively on information shared through its official platforms and avoid the spread of unverified news from unofficial sources. Such rumors, the department warned, only serve to create unnecessary fear and confusion.
The PMD reiterated its commitment to ensuring public safety by providing reliable weather forecasts and timely updates, urging citizens to stay informed through trusted channels.
