Islamabad, May 21, 2025: In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Pakistan, China, and Afghanistan have jointly agreed to expand the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) into Afghanistan under the broader framework of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). This strategic move aims to foster deeper economic ties, regional stability, and long-term prosperity across South and Central Asia.
During an informal trilateral dialogue, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi reaffirmed their shared commitment to advancing regional connectivity and security.
The leaders agreed that enhanced collaboration under the BRI umbrella would not only stimulate cross-border trade and infrastructure but also help stabilize Afghanistan’s economy. By integrating Afghanistan into CPEC, a flagship BRI project, the region is set to unlock new opportunities in transit trade, energy flow, and development financing.
“This trilateral cooperation remains a cornerstone for sustainable peace and economic integration in the region,” said Senator Ishaq Dar. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized, “We see Afghanistan not only as a neighbor but as a critical partner in building lasting regional synergy through CPEC.”
The meeting placed strong emphasis on counter-terrorism efforts and reaffirmed the need for practical coordination among the three countries to combat shared security threats. “Peace and development go hand in hand, and we are committed to both,” added Amir Khan Muttaqi.
Experts say extending CPEC to Afghanistan could act as a stabilizing force by creating jobs and enhancing connectivity with Central Asian markets. This could also open pathways for Afghanistan to become a bridge between South and Central Asia, boosting economic integration on a broader scale.
Looking ahead, the countries have mutually agreed to hold the 6th Trilateral Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Kabul at the earliest convenient time, marking a continued commitment to dialogue and actionable progress.
