Islamabad, Apr 10, 2025: IOC has approved the event schedule for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, and among the exciting additions is the return of cricket.

This decision, confirmed by the Executive Board of IOC on Wednesday, will see both men and women compete, with six teams in each format.

Each gender will have a total of 90 athletes, allowing for 15 players per team, as confirmed by International Olympic Committee.

This marks the return of cricket to the Olympics, having last featured in the 1900 Paris Games when England defeated France to win gold.

The venues for the cricket matches at the LA 2028 Games are yet to be determined, and the schedule will be confirmed as the event draws closer.

However, Pakistan cricket teams could miss out on LA 2028. The men’s team is ranked seventh, while the women’s team sits at eighth.

Cricket is one of five new sports being introduced for the Los Angeles Games, joining baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse, and squash.

All of these sports, except squash, will feature six teams, with squash having 16-player draws for both men and women.

The 2028 Games will feature competitions across various venues in Southern California, including the newly constructed Inglewood Stadium.

The IOC anticipates that this expanded programme will maintain the number of athletes while offering more opportunities for medals and a greater focus on gender balance.

The LA 2028 Games will include a record 351 medal events across 36 sports, with 11,198 athletes expected to participate.

This includes an almost equal split of 5,655 women and 5,543 men, a milestone in the ongoing push for gender equality in the Olympics.

New events in other sports, such as rowing, sport climbing, and athletics, have also been confirmed, with the inclusion of more mixed-gender competitions.
