The government is preparing to introduce AI-driven cybersecurity systems to secure critical infrastructure, sensitive information and digital operations from rising cyberattacks. Official documents from the Ministry of Information Technology reveal that these advanced systems will work in real time and will identify attacks ensuring quick responses.

The plan focuses on end-to-end protection across the entire lifecycle of AI systems. It covers secure development, real-time monitoring, and coordinated defence strategies for sharing threat intelligence. Authorities said the protocols would include secure data storage, safe transmission, and sandbox testing. Human oversight will remain mandatory, while all public sector AI systems will be listed in a register to ensure transparency.

To maintain standards, lifecycle evaluations, impact assessments, and third-party audits will be conducted. A new national data security policy will define security levels, auditing procedures, and training requirements. Identity management will also be strengthened through multi-factor authentication and role-based controls.

The policy outlines a framework for open-source AI use, ensuring security and controlled data sharing. Special safeguards will address risks linked to generative AI, including disinformation and fake news. The AI Directorate and Centre of Excellence in AI will promote research, startups, and ethical data practices.

Regulatory sandboxes will allow safe testing of new systems, with 20 enterprises expected to benefit by 2027. Officials say these steps will encourage responsible and inclusive use of AI technologies in Pakistan.
