Islamabad, May 23, 2025: In a major initiative to upgrade cargo transport and facilitate the business community, Pakistan Railways has officially added 30 newly manufactured high-speed, high-capacity freight wagons to its system.
The announcement was made during a ceremony held at Lahore Cantt Railway Station, where Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Railways, Aamir Ali Baloch, addressed the media and officials present.
“These wagons have been designed in response to the longstanding demand of our traders,” Baloch said. “They meet international standards and will significantly enhance our freight capabilities.”
Each wagon, he added, is capable of carrying up to 60 tons of cargo. “This marks a revolutionary step in improving our freight operations,” Baloch noted.
According to Baloch, the department plans to add a total of 850 freight wagons, of which 250 have already been brought into service. The rest are expected to be inducted by December 31 this year.

“These wagons are completely manufactured in Pakistan,” he stated. “It’s a major achievement for our local industry and proof that we have the capacity to deliver high-standard rail equipment domestically.”
He further explained that rail freight charges have been kept deliberately lower than road transport to offer a more economical alternative to traders. “Our goal is to reduce costs for our business sector while ensuring timely delivery,” he said.
