Islamabad, July 21, 2025: Pakistan is all set to launch its first trackless, ticketless, solar powered metro. In a major move to modernize Pakistan transportation system, Lahore has received its first trial vehicle of the Super Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (SRT) System, a trackless metro often called a “subway on wheels.”
The vehicle was brought in this month as part of a plan to check how this system could help improve city transport in Pakistan. The SRT works with Virtual Track Technology, a digital system with advanced sensors, GPS, and digital mapping instead of physical rails that guides the vehicle without needing regular train tracks.
A test run is already underway near Lahore Airport, a specific route chosen for this early phase of testing. “This is not just a test drive. This is a test for the future of public transport in Punjab,” said Punjab transport department official.

This initiative is a part of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz five-year transport plan. This new system will operate in 30 cities across the province. In the first stage, the SRT service will begin in Lahore, Faisalabad, and Gujranwala. After that, more cities will be added in phases. The goal is to bring this system to 30 cities within the next four years, with 10 cities added in each phase.
This type of transport is already running in several cities in China, as well as in Malaysia, the UAE, and Türkiye. It was first introduced in Jiangsu Province, China, in 2021. The system has also been honored with the Zhan Tianyou Award by the China Civil Engineering Society.
