ISLAMABAD, July 1, 2025: Pakistan has unveiled an ambitious plan to launch a ferry service from Gwadar Port to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, marking a major step in enhancing regional maritime connectivity and economic integration.
The announcement was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs, Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, in Islamabad. Senior officials from the ministry participated in the session, where the Minister outlined the government’s vision for Gwadar as a strategic transshipment and logistics hub.
“We aim to transform Gwadar into a major maritime center that benefits both Pakistan and the broader region,” said Minister Chaudhry.

With Gwadar Port now fully operational, the federal government is focusing on expanding its role in international shipping. The Minister directed concerned departments to expedite commercial development at the port and connect it with new international shipping lines.
As part of the initiative, a direct ferry service to GCC nations will be introduced, offering affordable passenger and cargo transport. The service is expected to support Pakistani expatriates, promote tourism, and create local employment opportunities, especially in Balochistan.
“This ferry service will boost people-to-people ties, enhance trade, and attract private investment in sectors like hospitality and marine services,” he added.
The Ministry has initiated consultations with shipping companies, port operators, and maritime authorities to finalize the technical, legal, and environmental frameworks. Safety, efficiency, and sustainability will be key priorities in the rollout phase.
This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s National Maritime Policy, aiming to develop the blue economy and position the country as a regional trade corridor through Gwadar.
