Islamabad, Sep 18: Pakistani cueists Asjad Iqbal and Awais Munir have reached the quarterfinals of the IBSF Mongolia World Cup Men 2024, showcasing their strong performance in the tournament.
In the Round of 16, Asjad Iqbal staged an impressive comeback against Hong Kong’s Chang Yu Kiu, winning 4-1. Despite losing the first frame 08-89, Iqbal secured the next four frames with scores of 74-62(62), 71-12, 57-46, and 71(68)-24.
In the Round of 16, Awais Munir secured a 4-2 victory over Chau Hon Man of Hong Kong. Despite losing the first frame 44-81, Munir bounced back to win the second frame 80-08.
After dropping the third frame 17-65, he clinched the fourth frame 88-42 and won the final two frames 85(79)-05 and 66-34.
The quarterfinals are set for tomorrow at 10am local time. Asjad Iqbal will face Gao Yang of China, while Awais Munir will compete against Ali Gharahgozlou of Iran.
In their third group stage matches on Sunday, both cueists emerged undefeated. Awais Munir defeated Iran’s Siyavosh Mozayani 3-1 with scores of 9-63, 78-34, 59-50, and 73-13. Asjad Iqbal won against Qatar’s Ali Alobaidli with frame scores of 59-36, 26-63, 58-19, and 70-58.
Their undefeated performances secured their positions at the top of their group stages, leading to their advancement to the Round of 16.
