Islamabad, Jan 6: In an extraordinary act of heroism and compassion, Pakistani citizen Asif Bashir has been nominated for an esteemed Indian Civil Award for his life-saving efforts during Hajj 2024. Bashir’s bravery came to the forefront when he risked his life to rescue 44 individuals, including 24 Indian nationals, amidst the extreme heat in Mina. With no immediate medical support available, Bashir physically carried pilgrims to safety, preventing further fatalities in the sweltering conditions.
In recognition of his selflessness, the Indian government has invited Bashir to receive the award on January 26, 2025. This acknowledgment has garnered significant attention both in India and Pakistan, where the Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, has expressed a keen interest in understanding the full scope of the rescue operation.
Prime Minister Sharif has directed the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Foreign Office to conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident. He has requested detailed reports regarding the circumstances surrounding the Mina rescue and the international recognition Bashir has received. The ministries have been asked to provide these reports by the end of the week, alongside recommendations on whether Bashir should be formally recognized by the Pakistani government for his exemplary service.
The Pakistani government is exploring the possibility of honoring Bashir for his courage before he receives the Indian award, ensuring that his extraordinary actions are acknowledged at home as well as abroad.
